Five days on Oʻahu sits at an awkward length, and the awkwardness has one cause: whether to move up to the North Shore for the back half.
On a week it is worth it. On five days it is not, and the reason is measurable rather than a matter of taste. A base change costs most of a day once you have checked out, driven, waited for a room and shopped again, and most of a day is a fifth of this trip. Waikīkī to Haleʻiwa is 59 minutes on our own measured drive times, so the North Shore is a day trip you have already paid for in petrol rather than a place you need to sleep.
So: one room for five nights, four full days out of Waikīkī, and the car only for the three days that actually need it. That last part is worth more than it sounds, because Waikīkī parking runs $35 to $50 a night on top of the rental.

Get in the water at Queen’s Surf
The quieter end of Waikīkī, past the aquarium. Gentle water, real sand and a fifteen minute walk from most of the strip.
- Sunset
Diamond Head, or not
Thirteen minutes away by car and reachable by bus, and it needs a reservation for out-of-state visitors. If your flight landed late, do this on day two instead and go straight to dinner. Day one is not the day to add a hike.

Eat early
You are probably on mainland time and it is probably three hours later in your head than on the clock. Eat before you are too tired to choose.
