Maui has three big days in it: the summit, the Hāna road and a Molokini morning. On a five-day trip, doing all three leaves you with no beach time at all, which for most people defeats the purpose of coming to Maui.
So this plan takes two. Haleakalā for sunrise and Molokini for the water, with a short taste of the Hāna highway as far as the north shore rather than the whole run to the far side.
What this week covers
- Sunrise above the clouds at 10,023 feet
- A first-boat Molokini morning
- Two proper beach days on the south shore
- The pretty half of the Hāna road without the full day in the car
Land, shop, swim
Based in Kīhei or Wailea
Nothing clever on day one. Get supplies and get in the water.
- Afternoon
OGG, Costco, south side
The Costco by the airport is the cheapest fuel and groceries on Maui. About 30 minutes on to Kīhei.
- 4pm
Kamaʻole Beach Park
Three linked beach parks with lifeguards and easy swimming. Kam III has the best sunset.
- Tonight
Confirm the summit forecast
Check cloud levels for tomorrow morning. If it looks solid, move sunrise to day three and swap in a beach day.
