A black sand beach backed by lava rock on Hawaiʻi Island

7-day itinerary

Hawaiʻi Island in 7 Days

A split-base week that stops you driving the island twice. Kona for beaches and boats, Volcano for the crater after dark.

Active pace Mid-range budget Apr to May, Sep to Oct Updated July 19, 2026

The Big Island is bigger than every other Hawaiian island combined and the single most common mistake is basing in Kona and day-tripping to the volcano. That is a four and a half hour round trip, which means you arrive tired and leave before dark, missing the part worth seeing.

This week splits: four nights on the Kona side, two nights near Volcano and an open-jaw flight home from Hilo if you can get one. If not, the drive back is easy on the final morning.

What this week covers

  • Kīlauea after dark, when any glow actually shows
  • Mauna Kea stars from the visitor station
  • The manta ray night snorkel off Kona
  • Black sand, green sand and a lot of empty road
Day 01

Land at Kona and go west

Based in Kailua-Kona

Short drive, big shop, first sunset. The Kona coast does sunsets better than anywhere in the state.

  1. Afternoon

    Collect the car at KOA

Kailua-Kona is about 15 minutes south. Costco near the airport is the cheapest stop for the week’s supplies and fuel.

  2. 4pm

    Magic Sands or Kahaluʻu Beach

Kahaluʻu has the easiest snorkeling on the island straight off the sand, with turtles most afternoons.

  3. Sunset

    Aliʻi Drive

Walk the seafront, eat somewhere with a view west and adjust to island time.

  4. Tonight

    Check eruption status

The USGS and National Park Service pages tell you what Kīlauea is doing this week. It changes the shape of days five and six.
