Snorkelers above a reef in clear Hawaiian water, the summer conditions the month is worth coming for

Planning

Hawaii in June

The short version

  • The best snorkeling and boat conditions of the year begin in June and hold through summer.
  • Early June is still shoulder pricing. Rates climb once mainland schools break up mid-month.
  • Water reaches 79 Fahrenheit. Flat, clear and warm on every leeward coast.
  • Dry season, so this is among the most reliable weather of the year.
  • No whales, and the north shore is flat, so winter spectacle is out.

June is the first month of the good ocean, and for a couple of weeks it is still priced like the quiet half of the year.

That gap is the whole opportunity, and it closes around the time mainland schools break up.

This is when the water is best

The thing summer actually buys you is not weather on land, it is conditions in the water. The north Pacific swell is gone, the trade winds are steady rather than stormy, and visibility on the leeward coasts is the best it gets.

Practically, that means snorkeling works nearly everywhere, boat trips cancel far less than they do between December and March, and the water sits at 79 Fahrenheit instead of the 76 it hit in February.

If snorkeling or a Nā Pali or Molokini boat is the reason for the trip, this is the season and it is not close.

Take the first half of the month

Summer pricing is driven by mainland school holidays, and those do not all start on 1 June. The first week or two of the month is frequently still shoulder rates with full summer conditions, which is the best trade available in the second half of the year.

By the last week of June you are paying July prices. If your dates are movable at all, move them earlier rather than later.

What June does not have

Whales. Long gone, back in Alaska.

North shore surf. Flat. Those beaches are swimming beaches now, which is a gain for most people and a loss if the winter spectacle was the point.

Bargains, after mid-month. Once the holidays start, June prices like July.

Is June a good month?

Early June is one of the best weeks of the year and very few people plan around it. Late June is summer: excellent conditions at summer prices, which is a fair deal rather than a good one.

If you want the same ocean for less, September is the answer and the water is even warmer. If you want the same weather without the crowd, May is a few weeks earlier and quieter.

Check the live numbers

Every month, side by side, is on the Hawaii weather reference: monthly rainfall for five stations plus sea temperature, taken from NOAA. The figures on this page describe a typical year. For the one you are actually travelling in:

  • Water temperature, NOAA station 1612340. Live and historic readings from Honolulu Harbor. The monthly averages quoted here are the 34,802 hourly observations, 2021 to 2024 mean from this station.
  • National Weather Service, Honolulu. Forecasts and warnings for every island, including the high surf advisories that decide which coasts are swimmable this week.
  • National Hurricane Center. Worth a look in the week before you fly between June and November, and worth ignoring the rest of the year.
