Hawaii Car Rental: How Not to Overpay

3 min read Updated August 14, 2026 Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi Island Affiliate disclosure

The short version

  • Book refundable as soon as flights are confirmed, then re-check every few weeks.
  • Never prepay. Prepaid rates are rarely worth losing the ability to rebook.
  • Check your credit card for collision coverage before buying it at the counter.
  • Off-airport pickup avoids a concession fee of roughly 11% to 12%.
  • One rental per island. There is no car ferry between them.

Hawaii rental prices swing harder than almost anywhere else in the country. The same car for the same week can differ by two or three times depending on when you booked it, and the difference is almost entirely about timing rather than about which company you chose.

Which means the strategy is simple and it is not about finding a secret cheap provider.

The whole method, in three lines

  1. Book something with free cancellation the day your flights are confirmed.
  2. Re-check every few weeks, and again in the fortnight before you fly.
  3. When it is cheaper, rebook and cancel the old one. It costs nothing.

That is it. A refundable booking is a free option on a car, and the only way to lose is to not hold one. The risk you are insuring against is not price, it is availability, because Kauaʻi and Maui do genuinely run dry in peak weeks.

Do not prepay

Prepaid rates advertise a discount of maybe 5% to 10%. In exchange you give up the thing that actually saves money here, which is the ability to rebook when the price falls. Given how much Hawaii pricing moves, that trade is almost never worth it.

Hold a car with no prepayment

The counter upsells, ranked

Collision damage waiver. Check your credit card first. Many travel cards include collision coverage on rentals when you pay with the card and decline the counter's waiver, which is $15 to $30 a day you do not need to spend. Call the number on the back of the card and ask specifically about rental collision coverage in the United States. Do this before you travel, not at the desk.

Prepaid fuel. Almost never worth it. You are buying a full tank and giving back whatever you do not use.

The Jeep or convertible. Genuinely fun and genuinely optional. No paved road in Hawaii that a rental contract permits requires four-wheel drive, including Saddle Road on Hawaiʻi Island. A convertible is a preference, not a solution.

Additional driver. Sometimes free for a spouse, sometimes not. Worth asking rather than assuming either way.

Airport versus off-airport

On-airport rentals in Hawaii carry a concession fee of roughly 11% to 12%, plus a customer facility charge. An off-airport branch avoids the concession fee, and on a long rental that is real money. The full cost breakdown puts that fee next to the state surcharge and the parking, which is where the money actually goes.

It is worth it when you are staying somewhere walkable and picking the car up later, which is the Oʻahu pattern. It is usually not worth it when you land at Kahului or Līhuʻe and need the car immediately, because a shuttle or rideshare each way eats the saving.

One rental per island

There is no car ferry between the Hawaiian islands. Island hopping means a separate rental on each island, dropped before your flight and collected after the next one.

Plan the gaps. An early inter-island flight means returning a car at dawn, and some airport branches open later than the first departures.

Under 25

Young driver surcharges in Hawaii typically run $20 to $35 a day for drivers aged 21 to 24, and most companies will not rent at all below 21. It is worth comparing across companies here, because the surcharge varies more than the base rate does.

What a comparison site is actually for

Comparing across companies matters most when you are rebooking, because the cheapest brand changes week to week. What you want is free cancellation, a clear total including fees, and no prepayment, so that holding a booking early costs you nothing and swapping it costs you nothing either.
